When “Revolutionary” Means “Work for $5”: Psychos on Upwork

End of the week — time for a little bit of chaos in the feed.

Lately I’ve been actively applying on Upwork for crypto projects. I genuinely want to build a bigger base of English-speaking clients, but the reality is: the platform attracts all kinds of people. Most are perfectly normal. Some are just… strange.

And then there are the ones that feel like they’re playing a parody of startup culture.

"It’s revolutionary — so you should work for $5"

I ran into a client who wanted us to work for $5, with no prepayment, and also requested completing a test task. The justification was classic: this is an innovative, revolutionary project that’s going to change the world.

They even attached the project’s coin logos.

Look, I’m all for ambitious ideas. Web3 needs builders, not cynics. But “vision” doesn’t replace basic business hygiene.

Why this is a red flag (especially in Web3)

    • Unrealistic budget — $5 isn’t a serious rate for any meaningful crypto/IT work.
    • No prepayment — a common signal that the client is optimizing for getting free labor.
    • Test tasks without boundaries — a test can be reasonable, but it must be small, clearly scoped, and ideally paid. Otherwise it becomes a “free prototype.”
    • Overuse of hype language — “revolutionary” is not a substitute for traction, clear requirements, or a real plan.

    My rule of thumb

If someone starts with “we’re changing the world” and simultaneously can’t pay for basic professional work, I treat it like a hard pass. Serious founders understand that execution costs money — even (and especially) at the earliest stage.

What do you think: have you seen similar characters on Upwork? How do you filter these out without missing genuine early-stage opportunities?
